Congratulations on your decision to get married! If you are thinking about getting married at St Wulfram’s Church, we will do our best to make your wedding day memorable for you, your family and your friends.
Can we get married at St Wulfram’s Church?
The Rector has a legal duty to be satisfied that you can lawfully marry in the parish before any arrangements can be fixed. To make this process as quick and simple as possible, it is best to contact the Parish Office. There are four questions about you as a couple that will need to be clarified:
1. Whether you are so closely related to each other that the law does not permit you to marry. You will need to certify that this is not the case.
2. Whether either of you is not a UK National. Special issues arise in this situation and these need to be considered before further progress can be made.
3. Whether either of you is qualified to be married at St Wulfram’s Church. Qualification comes by virtue either of being a resident in the parish; or of being on the church electoral roll; or of having close family links with the parish.
4. Whether either of you has been married before. In this case the Rector will need to see original copies of the Decree Absolute before any arrangements can be made.
After an initial meeting these issues will be clarified and you will be told whether it is possible for a wedding to take place.
What will it cost?
The fee for a wedding in 2019 is £526.00 plus £125.00 for the Organist. There are additional, optional fees should you wish to engage the Parish Choir, Bells or have special flowers. These will all be discussed on your initial visit.
Having your banns read at St Wulfram’s
If you live in the parish of St Wulfram’s Grantham and you intend to get married in another Church of England Church you will need to have your “banns” called out on three consecutive Sundays at St Wulfram’s. Every year a significant number of people have their banns read at our services. While it is not necessary for you to be there we always encourage couples to attend at least once.
What should I do if I need to have banns read at St Wulfram’s?
It is your duty to contact the Parish Office, either call in, email email@example.com or phone 01476 561342, and arrange for your banns to be called. You will also need to collect a certificate after the banns have been read to show to the minister who will officiate at your wedding that the banns have been called out. Failure to do this can cause a number of legal complications and can be expensive to resolve.
Check that you live in the ecclesiastical parish of St Wulfram’s - either go to the Church of England's website A Church Near You and enter your home postcode or contact Elaine in the Parish Office, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01476 561342, who will be able to advise you. An Application for Banns form will need to be completed which can either be emailed or sent by post to you.
Our Parish Administrator will tell you when your banns will be read out which will be during the 9.30am Parish Eucharist for 3 consecutive Sundays.
Arrange with our Parish Administrator when the form can be collected and the fee paid. In 2019 the fee for calling of banns is £30.00 and £14.00 for the certificate - making the total of £44.00. (Cheques should be made payable to St Wulfram’s Church).
Please allow plenty of time, it is advisable to contact us at least 3 months before your wedding.
